Wona Sumantri, BS, MIS

Head Instructor

Kak Wona Sumantri has been studying Pencak Silat for over 25 years and comes from a family of Pencak Silat practitioners. His native roots are of Sundanese ethnicity of West Java. He was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and raised in the USA. He was exposed to Pencak Silat through his father who trained in a traditional West Javanese Pencak Silat called Cimande. His knowledge of the technical aspects of Silat draws respect from Silat practitioners from different styles. Over the years he has studied various Pencak Silat systems that includes Bangau Putih, Silat Betawi, and Cimande. Kak Wona travels frequently to Indonesia to study with masters from Al-Azhar headquarters and to study with the masters from different Silat systems. He has an understanding of both Indonesian and American cultures. He frequently performs demonstrations at various local events and gives seminars.

Terra Kurnia, BA, MBA

Senior Instructor

Kak Terra Kurnia has been practicing Silat for over 25 years. His native roots are of Achenes ethnicity of the provence Aceh. He currently is the first full-time instructor focused on developing the youth program. He has taught hundreds of youth and has helped establish the Virginia school. Kak Terra specializes in the Bunga or artistic aspects of Silat and has won many first place trophies in forms division as well as World Champion in breaking. His remarkable flexibility and agility has encouraged many students to also excel in these areas, which is especially important in the art of Pencak Silat. He has a good relationship with many of the local karate tournament promoters. His cheerful and soft personality makes him a favorite for many of the children studying Silat. Kak Terra dedication to Pencak Silat is remarkable as he dedicated his entire time to development and promotion of Pencak Silat in the USA.

Abdul-Malik Ahmad, BA

Senior Instructor

Kak Abdul-Malik has been practicing Al-Azhar Pencak Silat for over 19 years since he was 15 years old. He was the founder of the ASBD Virginia branch in 1999 and has taught over 100 students. Kak Abdul-Malik has studied in Indonesia and competed in internationally in martial arts competitions and has won first place in many tournaments. He has a strong background in graphic design and web-development and is also is familiar with the business side of developing a lasting business plan in the arts due to his affiliation with the internationally acclaimed music group Native Deen. Kak Abdul-Malik’s specialty is sparring and regular train and spars with Silat fighters in ASBD as well as practitioners in other styles.

Rendy Sumantri

Senior Instructor

Kak Rendy is the younger brother and protégé of Kak Wona Sumantri. He has studied Pencak Silat in Indonesia and obtained his instructor level with Kak Wona. Kak Rendy and Kak Wona have created a dynamic team that perform Pencak Silat regularly at demos and teaches at the Indonesian Embassy twice a week. Rendy is the youngest of the four main active instructors but never ceases to dazzle onlookers by his agility and knowledge of Pencak Silat. He is known as a top fighter has competed in tournaments and has obtained first place. He is currently completing degrees in Information Technologies.
